Town Council hopes Ryan Reynolds will bring Welshpool to Welshpool

MyWelshpool’s cheeky call to bring a Hollywood character to Welshpool has been backed by the Town Council.

Our story this summer highlighted that a new character called ‘Welshpool’ had a cameo in the new Deadpool and Wolverine blockbuster starring Ryan Reynolds, the co-owner of Wrexham Football Club.

It then transpired that Wrexham striker Paul Mullin had played the part, and the costume has recently been put on display at the club’s ground.

Our headline to ‘Bring Welshpool to Welshpool’ captured the imagination of the town, and the Chair of the Town Council’s Property and Services Committee, Cllr Nick Howells, wants it to happen.

“They have got this amazing suit on display in a glass case at Wrexham Football Club and wouldn’t it be great if we could bring Welshpool to Welshpool?” said Cllr Howells, who has been liaising with MyWelshpool to make initial enquiries.

“But we are struggling to get hold of a contact, and we also need to look at the feasibility of it all. But we are not giving up on it, we’re still working on it and, if possible, we would love Ryan Reynolds to agree to do it as part of his documentary.”

Cllr Phil Pritchard, a former Football Association of Wales President, volunteered to use his contacts to contact the club.

Councillors supported the idea with Cllr Morag Bailey saying: “I think it would be brilliant if we could get it here. The kids would love it. I would want my photo taken next to it. We should try, and it would do Welshpool good.”

Councillor Billy Spencer asked: “Could we also show the film here as part of having it here too?”

Councillors supported Cllr Howells in following through with the suggestion.

Welshpool has enjoyed a marketing bonanza on the back of the film, with Mr Reynolds regularly using the Welshpool hashtag in his social media posts to millions of fans.
