Former Montgomeryshire MP passes away

22/08/2024 @ 12:22

Former Montgomeryshire Member of Parliament Delwyn Williams has died at the age of 85, following illness.

Mr Williams will be best remembered for shaking up the local political landscape in 1979 by ending decades of Liberal domination and winning the General Election as a Conservative.

He ousted Emlyn Hooson by a majority of 1,593, but then lost the seat by 668 votes at the 1983 election to another Liberal, Alex Carlile.

Mr Williams, who spent most of his life living in Guilsfield, went to Welshpool High School and then studied at Aberystwyth University, going on to practice law.

At the 2015 General Election, Mr Williams changed allegiance by backing the UK Independence Party.

Mr Williams passed away at the Severn Hospice last night.
