HGVs told to ‘steer clear’ of Red Bank

New signage has been installed to tell heavy goods vehicles (HGV) to avoid driving up Red Bank as a short cut.

It has been problematic for many years caused by lorries using the road ‘over the top’, particularly at the narrow exit/entry at the bottom of Red Bank, and at the junction on the other side onto the Guilsfield/Llanfyllin road.

The move has been praised by a county councillor who has been calling for action for several years.

“It’s taken a long time to get some action but on top of the 20mph restrictions we now have new signs warning drivers of both heavy and long vehicles to steer clear of Red Bank,” said Cllr Graham Breeze.

“The stretch between Church Bank and the Guilsfield junction is simply not suitable for the bigger vehicles and I really hope that drivers will now take the advice and avoid the area.”

Whether HGV drivers, used to the short cut, will take the advice remains to be seen but Cllr Breeze also praised his council officers for taking notice of concerns.

“A big ‘thank-you’ to the Powys County Council officers for recognising the need to restrict the dangers on this well-used stretch of road,” he said, adding that the town bus will continue its route, and service and emergency vehicles will still use the road for access.
