Ex-mayor “not happy” over tourist centre work dragging on

Welshpool’s most recent ex-mayor said he is “not happy” that there is still no sign of the work being completed at the town’s Tourist Information Centre.

The controversy surrounding the cost to renovate the centre has been a huge story, with the burgeoning budget expected to approach £300,000 by completion.

And, at the end of a discussion over grants at this week’s monthly full Town Council meeting, Cllr Nick Howells made his feelings known.

“Just have it noted please that it is ongoing, still, and I am not happy that they (the company responsible) have not come back with a completion date,” said Cllr Howells. “Paul McGrath (Town Council Operations Manager) and myself have been pushing on this for months and it’s just one thing after another.”

The building is going through a transformation to provide better and more inclusive toilet facilities, as well as office space for Town Council staff which will save the local authority thousands of pounds a year in rent.

The Town Council is hoping that most of the final bill will be met by grants.
