Welshpool minor injury unit escapes hours axe

25/07/2024 @ 08:09

You will still be able to access Welshpool hospital’s minor injury unit 12 hours a day, seven days a week, despite Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) making county-wide cuts to hours.

The facility is just one of four in the county, but two are seeing their hours slashed as the health board grapples with funding pressures.

So when can you access the Welshpool facility?

Welshpool’s minor injury unit is open from 8am-8pm seven days of the week, but operates a “phone first” basis.

All patients are asked to phone before attending so that a telephone assessment and advice can be offered, along with an appointment if appropriate.

The health board said these arrangements are in place “to keep you safe and keep our staff safe”.

You can contact the unit through 01938 558919 or 01938 558931.

If you are not able to use the telephone then drop-in continues to be available.

Minor Injury Units in Powys are able to treat adults and children aged two years and over.

Why are changes happening elsewhere?

According to PTHB, it faces a number of challenges to maintain quality, safety, outcomes and financial sustainability for patients and communities.

Waiting times for planned care increased during the COVID pandemic and remain high.

Inflationary pressures affect the whole of the public sector, increasing the costs of service delivery.

More people are living longer with multiple health conditions. And there are pressures on staffing, including that the proportion of people of working age is reducing.

PTHB said it is taking these immediate steps to help maintain quality services within available resources.
