Record breakers!

A group of local engineers have set two new UK land speed records using a 60-year-old engine!

The Bonneville Bantam team, consisting of members from Welshpool and Newtown, set the new records on Pendine Sands in Pembrokeshire, the historic home of Land Speed racing, where they competed in the 2015 Pendine Speed Week.

The team, who made international headlines back in 2013 when they built two bikes to claim three world records at the Bonneville Speed Week in USA, is now planning another transatlantic jaunt for more speed records.

“We set the Modified Production Vintage 125cc record at 90.5mph (bike 375) and the Special frame vintage 125cc record at 94.7mph (bike 376),” said Karl Meredith, from Welshpool, who ride bike 375. “Both bikes are powered by a 1955 BSA Bantam engine and the records were set over a mile course on Pendine sands.”

Stephen Roberts, of Newtown, rides bike 376, and said the team, which also included pit crew members Chris Roberts, Tim Madeley and Fred Meredith, are hungry for more!

“We aim to continue to develop the bikes as we want to return to Bonneville Speed Week and push the records over 100mph, a sizeable task for a 60-year-old engine!” he said.
