Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday

OTMS (55)

A slightly less entry this week to last, averages of the day were 112.47ppkg for the older cows and 122.25ppkg for the younger cows. Top price achieved, and receiving the Briarwood Products LTD prize of £25 for highest price on the day, was for a British Blue cow weighing 809kg making £1375.30 from RB Jones, LLwynobin. E W Jones & Son, Lower Llanerchydol, presented a Charolais cow weighing 837kg making £1062.99. Mr Jones, Llwynobin, also presented a Limousin cow weighing 725kg which made £1029.50. An under 48 months Blonde D’Aquitaine steer forward from JDM Corfield, The Bank,  weighed 846kg which made £1218.24.

PRIME LAMBS (6720)

An entry of 6720 prime lambs we saw an overall average of 169.78pp/kg.

Super Lights (6) to 131pp/kg from D B Williams, Ty Coch. Others to 130pp/kg from F Williams, Cefnllidiart. Average of 125.80pp/kg.

Lights (556) to 183pp/kg from E & D Jones, Lluestwen. Others to 178pp/kg from F Williams, Cefnllidiart. Average of 156.38pp/kg.

Standards (1599) to 196pp/kg from D Owen, Esgairgyfela. Others to 195pp/kg from S J Smith, Penybryn. Average of 169.03pp/kg.

Mediums (3123) to 220pp/kg from J W Hopkins, Bank Farm. Others to 214pp/kg from E L Andrew, Trewern Cottage. Average of 171.72pp/kg.

Heavies (1229) to 185pp/kg from L B Owen, Garth Vaughan. Others to 181pp/kg from WEG Evans, Llwynycrwth. Average of 165.09pp/kg.

Over Weights (142) to 159pp/kg from R M Evans, New House & EJ & AJ Roberts, Longlands. Others to 156pp/kg J E Bennett, Gopas. Average of 151.89pp/kg.

CULL EWE (2423)

An entry of 2423 culls saw averages of £51.92 for ewes and £75.27 for rams. Top price achieved in the ewes was £118 for a pen of 7 from DV Bebb, Gelli. JHH Jerman, Wernddu, presented a single ewe making £116. D R Owen & Son, Sandilands, presented a pen of 9 ewes making £106. Rams topped at £128 from E & D Jones, Lluestwen. Others to £125 from D L Jones, Ddol, for two rams.

Weekly sales of cull ewes to commence immediately after prime lambs at approximately 12 noon.

DAIRY COWS

Only two dairies forward met with a sound trade with a top price of £1840 for a heifer from Alan Morris, Maestanyglwyden. A 2nd calver from Bow Wood Farms Limited sold for £1400. STORE LAMBS & BREEDING EWES

Store Lambs: A pleasing entry of 1028 lambs averaging £57.00, top call of the day went to G Jones, 12 Maesyfoel, for Texel x wether lambs selling to £72.

Whilst Texel x wether lambs from GH & CA Jones, Bynmawr, sold to £69.50. Theave lambs from M E Thomas which would be suitable for breeding sold to £68.20.With Texel x tup lambs from R Hamer, Ael Y Bryn, selling to £69.

Sale store lambs to commence from 10.30am next week.

Breeding Ewes: Only a small entry this week seeing 98 breeding ewes forward. Top price this week was £80 going to MB Roberts, Woodleasowes, for Texel x ewe lambs. Suffolk x ewe lambs from the same home achieved £79. Other highlights saw Mule ewe lambs sell to £75 forward from L E Brymer Friffiths & Co, Bryneira. Same again next week selling breeding ewes from 11 am.
