More 4G masts coming to the area

More 4G mobile telephone masts will come on stream soon, allowing improved access to phone signals in the north Powys area.

It also means emergency services in the area have better connectivity in rural areas.

Montgomeryshire Senedd Member Russell George has been supporting these developments, which form part of the UK’s new 4G critical communications system for emergency services. Several masts are already operational, while others are progressing through various stages of implementation.

The new infrastructure is being delivered through a collaborative effort. Mobile provider EE is upgrading its existing network, and the Home Office is building additional masts to extend 4G coverage into areas where it is currently limited.

This work is closely aligned with the Shared Rural Network programme, as highlighted in a recent letter to Senedd Member Russell George, from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

The department confirmed that six of the masts in Montgomeryshire are already active and delivering new 4G coverage as part of the programme, two masts in the Llanidoes area, Rhiwargor, Maengwynedd, Llanfyllin and Tregynon.

They also reiterated their commitment to ensuring progress on other masts still under development.

Building Digital UK are an executive agency within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and are responsible for delivering broadband and mobile coverage to hard-to-reach places across the UK. The Montgomeryshire Senedd member is due to meet with them in January to discuss the progress of masts not yet online.

Mr George has said that he remains committed to ensuring that Montgomeryshire communities benefit fully from this crucial investment in connectivity.

He said: “This programme is a vital investment in our local mobile infrastructure, delivering improved connectivity for mid Wales These masts will provide the emergency services with the improved communication systems they need, while also enhancing mobile services for residents and businesses.

"I have been liaising with Building Digital UK for some time and I continue to work with them on the progression of these masts. Rural communities across Montgomeryshire deserve a strong reliable mobile connection.

"More masts will be coming online in 2025 and I look forward to meeting with the organisation in the new year. I will be providing further updates on the continued progression of this work.”
