Powys: ‘Our drainage system failing to cope with climate change’

18/10/2024 @ 01:13

A Powys County Council cabinet member has blamed climate change for the problems caused by overflowing drainage systems following this week’s deluge.

Roads continue to be impacted by the torrential rain that the Welshpool area experienced earlier this week, following the storm that ran from Wednesday through to the early hours of Thursday morning.

Significant disruption was caused with a number of roads closed due to floodwater while landslides and fallen trees also impacted the road network. Drains and culverts, like the one pictured on Borfa Green bank, became overloaded due to the volume of rainwater that fell in the county in just a few hours.

Some roads remain closed due to flooding and won’t re-open until the water has receded. The B4393 near Llansantffraid is open under traffic management after it was damaged by floodwater.

Powys County Council’s Highways Team, supported by emergency services, were at the forefront of work responding to various flood-related incidents across the county.

The team are now undertaking flood clean-up works and removing debris from drains and culverts following this weather event.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, said: “I want to praise our staff for their hard work in responding to numerous incidents following the torrential rain the whole county experienced.

“This has had a significant impact on our road network which we will be assessing and will carry out the necessary repair works over the coming days.

“Many of the culverts and inlets that flooded or overtopped were completely overwhelmed in just a few hours. It is clear that in many locations our drainage infrastructure is failing to cope with the impact of climate change.”
