Biker gang eyes Welshpool mission

An organised group of bikers have added an interesting twist to the ongoing Motte and Bailey saga that has become a thorn in Welshpool’s side.

The historical site opposite Tesco has fallen into ruin, and could end up costing the Town Council an arm-and-a-leg when the lease runs out in 2038 and they have to hand it back to owners Powis Estates in the same condition, or better, than they received it in when first leasing the area.

It’s become an ongoing headache for the local authority who would ideally want to wash their hands on it all-together, but are trapped into the long-term lease.

However, at last night’s Town Council Services and Property Committee meeting, a new development was shared with councillors.

Cardiff-based biker group, The Valley Commandoes, have made initial enquiries about taking on the facility, keen to renovate the former social club to be used for helping to address mental health issues, particularly amongst veterans, in the area.

“They are bikers but some of them are ex-military and some attended our remembrance parade last year,” explained Committee Chair, Cllr Nick Howells.

“They were really nice guys and I spent a lot of time talking to them. They expressed an interest in renting the old bowling club house and green. (They are) talking about hosting mini festivals, concerts.

“They focus on men’s mental health. They do an awful lot with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. While we were down there looking at it, and as we left, one of the guys saw the old football social club, which is derelict, so we had a look inside and he said within the group there are lots of tradesmen and if we could come to some agreement, possibly a rent-free basis for two or three years, they would take it on.

“Their head guy in this area is keen to do a full business plan which he wants to present to full council and Powis Estates. I was quite impressed with their ideas.”

Cllr Morag Bailey was concerned that women could be excluded, but Cllr Howells reassured her that the group had female members and that their mental health support was extended to all veterans.

Councillors agreed to back the sub-committee to continue with discussions with The Valley Commandos, who did a similar project near Mountain Ash, south Wales.
