Welshpool to bid farewell to Dr Solomon Wednesday

02/07/2024 @ 01:49

The funeral for former local GP, Dr Tony Solomon, will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) after he passed away last month.

One of the town’s most recognisable personalities, Dr Solomon, who was born in 1938, settled in Welshpool in 1975 via The Solomon Islands and Abergavenny to become a much-respected doctor at the Welshpool Medical Centre.

In his retirement, he continued to volunteer his medical expertise in far flung places such as Myanmar, India and South Africa.

He was a longstanding member of the town’s Rotary Club, serving as President in 1993/4, and the club has paid tribute this morning, saying: “Welshpool Rotary Club members past and present were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Dr Tony Solomon.

“Dr Solomon served as President of the Club in 1993/4 and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship on two occasions. The first in 2009 and again in 2011.

“He remained in regular contact with the club throughout his illness, and he brought sound judgement and commitment to uphold the ideals of Rotary, ‘Service above Self’, which sums up Tony’s life and work.

“He will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues.

“Welshpool Rotary express our deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.”

A celebration of his life will be held at his home on Severn Road from 11.30am, followed by internment at Maesgwastad before returning back to the house at about 1pm.

Those attending are informed there are no flowers and donations can be made to Parkinson’s UK, a charity Dr Solomon supported.

The family has also informed mourners that they do not need to wear black if they don’t wish to.
