Company employees reach the top!

16/05/2024 @ 05:48

Most companies tend to go for drinks or books some go-karting for team bonding, but one Welshpool firm went the extra mile, literally!

Employees of Welshpool firm Newmor took on the tough challenge of climbing the highest peak in Wales – Yr Wyddfa – and raised some much-needed charity funds at the same time.

Wew met the company and asked why… and what’s next!

Why did the company decide to do this?

At Newmor, we take immense pride in our Welshpool roots. We’ve been established in the area since 1967, and it’s not just where we work; it’s our home and our community. That’s why supporting organisations like Ponthafren, who work tirelessly to improve the well-being of our community members, is so important to us.

We also understand how important getting outdoors and away from work can be for your mental health. Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we wanted to provide our team with the opportunity to do something good together, enjoy some time in nature, and raise money for a local cause.

How did you choose the charity that benefited?

Ponthafren Association provides two wellness, learning, and recovery centres in North Powys, alongside remote and outreach services, to help bring communities together and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. They are a lifeline to members of our Welshpool community who find themselves in times of crisis.

The importance of mental health services cannot be understated for those who need them. You never know when you or somebody you love may need to use them, and that’s why we value the work Ponthafren does so highly.

How many employees took part?

Sixteen members of our team from across the company took part – from design, sales, and marketing, to management and manufacturing.

How did it go on the day?

We knew this would be a challenge, and we certainly didn’t pick the easy route! The team worked so hard on the ascent, although we may have told ourselves some white lies to push through (“it's not long now – we promise!”). The push was worth it, and the views from the top were spectacular.

How much was raised?

We have currently raised almost £900, but our journey doesn’t end there. Mental health support is an ongoing need, and since it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re still welcoming donations to support the incredible work of Ponthafren. If you haven’t had a chance to contribute yet, there’s still time! Every donation, big or small, helps us make a meaningful impact. Are there plans for a future adventure too?

Our charity fundraiser will become an annual event, where we will continue to go on adventures to support important local charities who do so much for our community, like Ponthafren. Watch this space!
