After more than a year of campaigning and lobbying, a new community charity has finally succeeded in bringing back Day Centre services to Welshpool from this Friday.
The Welshpool Community Haven was created by a group of likeminded carers who recognised that the town was desperately missing the services that were once run from the Ann Holloway Centre, next to the hospital.
Budget constraints meant that the service stopped during Covid with the Town Council at the time revealing it was losing more than £100,000 a year. But it was a blow to the local elderly who had come to love the popular service.
But as we have featured on a MyWelshpoolTV report, the group took a different approach and after capturing the imagination of the area, they will welcome their first visitors to use the new set-up this Friday.
“The Ann Holloway Centre is such a perfect facility so we are delighted to be able to re-introduce this vital service to the town from this Friday,” said Laura Hares, from Welshpool Community Haven.
The centre will run every week on a Friday to start but the group hopes to introduce more days moving forward.
Registrations are still being taken for people to attend, with ‘Friday Club’ expected to run from 10am-2pm. The group are also after more volunteers to come forward.
For more information to register or to volunteer, contact contact@welshpoolcommunityhaven.co.uk or visit the centre on Friday and grab a form.
“We are still welcoming applications from volunteers happy to undergo a DBS check and volunteer their time on a Friday whether its weekly, fortnightly or monthly, we would love your support to grow our community,” said Laura.
“We will also be welcoming donations. As we reach towards our maximum grant funded lunches of 20, we are appealing to businesses and our community who may be in a position to support. A funded lunch costs £6.50 and the more support we have for these the more places we can offer for our community. If you are able to support us on our journey to creating a more connected community, we would be very grateful for your support.”
