A fund set up to bring Welshpool ex-professional footballer Wayne ‘Wanners’ Evans home following his tragic sudden death in the USA at the weekend has shot past £6,000 after just 24 hours.
The Just Giving page was set up by former Walsall Football Club teammate, Chris Marsh, who said he had spoken to Wayne’s wife, Bev, and she had told him it would cost up to £30,000 to bring the former Welshpool Town ace home.
The fund was boosted by another ex-teammate, Adi Viveash, who contributed £3,000 and added: “Absolutely devastated to have lost a really top human and dear ex-teammate and friend. My heart goes out to wonderful Bev and all of Wanners’ family. RIP mate.”
The news has stunned an area that had enjoyed following Wanners’s successful professional career that saw him chalk up around 500 appearances for Walsall, Rochdale and Kidderminster Harriers.
The 51-year-old died suddenly on Saturday in his USA home, where he had moved to continue his coaching journey following a successful spell as Shrewsbury Town Academy Manager for four years until 2013.
