42 new Welsh Lidl stores, but Welshpool misses out

Hopes that Lidl would be bringing its low-price products to Welshpool in the future have been dashed.

The supermarket giant has been laying out its expansion plans, with four Powys towns earmarked for new stores among the 42 new locations in Wales.

But Welshpool has missed out, which wont particularly bother shoppers who already have the choice of Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi. However it would have been encouraging to see the former Sainsbury's building (pictured) finally taken on by a major retailer.

And with the grocer opening an average of 50 stores per year over the past few years, Welshpool could yet be included in the future.

Lidl GB CEO, Ryan McDonnell, said: “The last few years have been challenging for everyone, but we’ve made it clear that we’re more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store.

“That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.

“We had over 1.4 million new shoppers coming to us from our competitors over the course of last year.”

The Powys towns set for a new Lidl:

  • Brecon
  • Builth Wells
  • Llandrindod Wells
  • Ystradgynlais
