One of the Welshpool Dictionary’s favourite words was shared with the wider world on national radio this morning – sort of!
Radio 2’s Gary Davies was discussing the launch of a Loch Ness Monster Guide in Inverness and invited listeners to call in with their own famous mythical stories.
Never one to shy away from a chance to promote the town in his own unique way, local businessman Paul Alexander messaged in with his slice of made-up mythical magic.
But it didn’t quite go to plan.
The veteran presenter read out to his millions of listeners: “Paul in Welshpool said that in his home town, apparently, under the famous Town Hall, there is a ghost called ‘My-Gram’ and people come from all over Wales to see if they can see the ‘My-Gram’.”
As we all know, the word should have been pronounced ‘maigram’ – meaning an ‘idiot’ which is commonly used in the Welshpool area.
“Gary Davis basically asked if your town is famous for anything, no matter how small! So, I thought I’d get ‘maigram’ in there, even though he pronounced it wrong!” said Paul, who jokingly posted on his Facebook page immediately after: “FFS Gary, it’s pronounced ‘M-A-Y-G-R-U-M’.”
Paul is known for his humour on social media and is one half of the talented duo, alongside Steve Edwards (right), that penned the hilarious track 'Y Trallwng' in 2019.
