Businesses have responded by supporting this Saturday’s charity fight night, after it was revealed that the cost to hire the town hall venue was £700.

Welshpool Amateur Boxing Club hires the town hall for its annual charity fundraiser, but the amount it costs to rent has raised a few eye brows after it was revealed online by a supporter.

It prompted a lively debate, with the town council admitting it had no choice but to charge due to the costs of running the venue.

But supporters rallied round and one local businessman pledged £100, and called on other businesses to follow suit.

“I’m shocked that after so many years and at nearly 70 years of age Mike (Sinden) hasn’t had the support of our town council,” said Billy Spencer, from Spencer Quality Used Cars.

“We need to be getting together to help someone who provides a club for the youngsters of this town, as let’s face it there’s not much else going on for them.”

Several businesses have stepped forward which will enable the club to raise more money for its future.

Businesses that have come forward include:

Billy & Holly Spencer - Spencer Quality Used Cars

Steve & Helen Wright - Wrights Taxis

Beth, Adie & Robert Ballard - H Ballard & Sons

Rhian Suddell - Amber Cabs

Davina Barr - The Welly

Rose & Jordan Harding - The Pheasant & Green Dragon Inns

Rhys & Craig Humphreys - The Angel & Moltos Welshpool
