Welshpool Foodbank is on the brink of being saved after it was revealed that a local charity was in advanced talks to restart the vital service.
Last month we revealed that the foodbank, which had operated for 13 years from the Methodist Church, closed suddenly due to the lead organisers being unable to continue.
It caught the town on the hop, and Welshpool Town Council vowed to do what it could to save the service, which has provided over 121,000 meals.
And at last night’s Operations and Development meeting, Town Clerk Richard Williams provided an encouraging update.
He said: “Last month we were told that the foodbank was closing and wondering where the food was going to go. Well, we have received news that a local organisation is about half way through its due diligence check with The Trussell Trust about re-establishing a foodbank in Welshpool.
“I can’t reveal the charity yet because it hasn’t finished its due diligence, but that will be a great benefit back to Welshpool having seen the foodbank close.”
The Welshpool Foodbank operated on a referral voucher system from the town’s Kingswood Church and had become a vital resource for many in the area.
It was founded by Rob and Denise Field who were soundly praised following the announcement of its closure.
