Welshpool launches initiative to ‘identify local priorities’

Welshpool Town Council has taken the first steps towards developing a new Place Plan for the town, with members of the Working Group meeting to begin preparations for this important community project.

A Place Plan is a community-led planning document that will help identify local priorities and aspirations for Welshpool’s future. Although progress currently depends on the publication of Powys County Council’s Replacement Local Development Plan, the Place Plan Working Group has agreed to begin gathering information and laying the foundations for the project.

The Working Group agreed that the Place Plan should consider the Welshpool community as a whole, ensuring every part of the area is assessed and represented. To support this, a programme of site visits will begin, with members recording observations and photographic evidence across a range of themes, including economic development, design, the environment, transport and parking, regeneration, retail, community facilities and heritage.

The first evidence-gathering visit took place at Pool Quay in August, marking the beginning of the assessment process. This initial visit has helped refine the approach for similar visits to be carried out across the rest of Welshpool.

The council said that community involvement will be at the heart of the Place Plan with them committed to allowing residents of all ages to share their ideas and help shape the future of the town.

They added that a variety of engagement activities will be organised throughout the project, including visits to local schools to encourage younger people to have their say.

“To ensure everyone understands the process, Welshpool Town Council will provide clear information explaining what a Place Plan can - and cannot - influence, helping residents contribute informed and meaningful feedback,” said a spokesperson.

“Updates will also be shared through our communication channels and a dedicated webpage is being established.”
