Town Hall Remembrance event set to be dropped

Welshpool could reduce its Remembrance events from three to two this November after the Town Council worked with The Royal British Legion to plan the 2026 schedule.

It was revealed at the latest Town Council Events & Planning Committee meeting that following advice from The Royal British Legion, the recommendation was to hold two events, on Remembrance Sunday and in the Memorial Garden on the day itself (Wednesday, November 11).

Previously, Armistice Day was marked with a two-minute silence at 11am outside the Town Hall, with the Memorial Garden service held on the Friday before Remembrance Sunday.

But a proposal has been made to merge the two midweek events into one at the Memorial Garden to incorporate the 11am two-minute silence on Armistice Day, and to scrap the extra Town Hall event.

The Remembrance Sunday parade and St Mary’s Church service will still take place.

However, councillors were reluctant to make the final call and have instead asked for schools and other groups concerned to be contacted for input before making their decision at the full council meeting later this month.

Cllr Estelle Bleivas also asked that the family of Lance Corporal Paul Thomas, who sadly died in the Iraq conflict, be kept informed of any developments.
