Changing Places toilet finally set to open

The specialist Changing Places toilet for severely disabled people is set to open in the Welshpool Information Centre any time now.

The project has been in the mix for the best part of four years and was included in the original plans to overhaul the building into a more multi-functional facility that now also incorporates the Town Council administration.

Former Mayor, Cllr Nick Howells, had negotiated with Powys County Council and the Diocese of St Asaph to obtain the required equipment from a similar facility put into Castle Caereinion Primary School, that has now closed down.

But snags appeared along the way with the project being delayed, but at the latest Town Council Operations & Development Committee it was reported that the finishing touches were being made.

“We hit a slight snag last month when we were advised that the sink we had been donated was not compatible. However, whilst we were expecting the worst, a new sink cost us under £1,000 which we have now bought.

“It will be put in and the place given a good clean to get it open.”

Cllr Howells said the donated materials would have cost in excess of £10,000 and was praised by Committee Chair, Cllr Phil Pritchard, who said: “We will all see the benefits for this and congratulations to Nick for being behind it all the way.”

Changing Places are few and far between in Mid Wales and it is hoped that the facility will entice more people to stop and visit the town.
