Plaid Cymru sweep to big win for Gwynedd Maldwyn

08/05/2026 @ 10:38

Plaid Cymru have swept to a convincing Welsh elections victory in our Gwynedd Maldwyn constituency with four candidates to represent us at the Senedd from the six available.

The party received 36,087 votes, almost 14,000 more than Reform in second who will fill the remaining two local seats at the Welsh parliament.

It means that Siân Gwenllian, Mabon ap Gwynfor, Beca Brown and Elwyn Vaughan will become Members of the Senedd for Plaid Cymru, with Andrew Griffin and Claire Johnson-Wood representing Reform UK.

The Welsh Conservatives polled 5,650 votes in third with the Welsh Liberal Democrats just pipping Welsh Labour to fourth.

Russell George failed in his bid to retain his seat at the Senedd, polling 2,862 votes as an Independent.

A total of 81,889 people voted, which is a 52.59% turnout.

Across Wales the picture was similar, with Plaid Cymru having the most seats with 43, but short of the 49 needed for a majority.

Reform UK will take up 34 seats to lead the opposition with Labour on nine, the Conservatives on seven, the Green Party on two and the Lib Dems with one seat.
