Brook Street to close after all!

05/05/2026 @ 04:19

In yet another u-turn, it has been decided that Brook Street will close after all, meaning two weeks of diversion misery for motorists from May 11.

We have asked Wales & West Utilities for clarification after a sign appeared over the weekend announcing the closure, just a day after the company told us it would not be shut and continue to operate under traffic lights.

But it appears that is no longer possible due to health and safety with the road expected to stay shut until May 25.

This afternoon, Cllr Graham Breeze confirmed: “Despite the contractors’ best efforts, Welshpool’s Brook Street is going to have to close for a 14-day period starting next Monday and diversion routes will need to be followed.

“Wales & West Utilities have now reached a point where the works can no longer be carried out safely under multi-way traffic lights. As a result, Brook Street will need to be fully closed from May 11-25.”

Access will be allowed to Ballards Garage and the County Council buildings (former library) from the west side and access to the conservatory business from the east side.

Business open as usual signs will be displayed on both sides and access for residents will remain.
