Four police officers were “violently attacked” after coming under attack whilst responding to reports of disorder in Welshpool on Thursday afternoon.
Reinforcements were required and two men were arrested as a result, with one senior officer describing the incident as “shocking” and “wholly unacceptable”. A member of the public has also been praised for assisting the officers.
Dyfed-Powys Police responded to a report of a disorder taking place on Foundry Lane at around 3.30pm.
But they said that during efforts to arrest the two suspects, the four officers suffered injuries by kicking, punching and headbutting.
The two men, aged 36 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting police and disorder offences.
Powys Commander, Superintendent Gareth Grant, said: “This was a shocking and wholly unacceptable incident. Our officers dedicate their careers to keeping people safe, and should never have to face such a violent attack at work.
“I want to thank the member of the public who selflessly intervened to support the officers while back-up units were called to the scene.
“I will take a zero-tolerance approach towards anyone using violent or abusive behaviour against any of my officers and will relentlessly pursue offenders who commit such thuggish crimes.”
