Headline act posing a Carnival conundrum

The search for a headline act to woo spectators at this summer’s Carnival is continuing to pose a problem for organisers.

Plans are progressing for the June 27 event, with the Welshpool Town Council-led Carnival Committee meeting regularly to pull it together.

But at their latest March meeting, the issue of a headline act for the Carnival field has again posed a problem, leading to the committee asking Event & Markets Manager Kimberly Wright to be asked to sound out the BMX’ers who provided a great show last year.

But it was met by a lukewarm response from councillors at the Events & Planning Committee meeting this week where Cllr Morag Bailey said: “We had BMX last year and I don’t think we should have them again because we could be looking at them next year when we have the Tour de France here.”

With time ticking on, Ms Wright asked councillors to come back to her with ideas as soon as possible.

“There are no other suggestions,” she said. “It is a difficult one being a sports theme so we are very limited to what it could be.”

Cllr Phil Owen, the Town Mayor, asked whether local Olympian Adele Nicoll’s bobsleigh could be positioned at the field as a display.

The council is also directly contacting organisations and clubs in the area to encourage them to participate in the procession.

What’s confirmed to date:

·      28 stallholders were booked onto the carnival at the time of the meeting.

·      The Mid Wales classic vehicle club have agreed to participate and perform a running commentary as the cars will be displayed on the pitch.

·      Birds of prey

·      Inflatables

·      Three acts confirmed for the Arena area - Headline act yet to be booked
