Welshpool Town Council’s bid to bring more visitors to the town centre launches this Saturday with free parking in Church Street Car Park.
The local authority is keen to do what it can to back local businesses, and agreed earlier this year to implement the ‘pay what you can’ policy every Saturday from this weekend for six months.
It is costing the town tax payer around £6,000 to compensate Powys County Council for lost revenue, but they hope to recoup some of that cost with ‘pay what you can’ donations from parkers.
A spokesperson said: “This scheme applies every Saturday during the trial period between April 4, and September 26. It only applies in Church Street Car Park located on Mill Lane.
“Parking is free and you do not need to pay anything to use the car park during the trial period. However, if you would like to support the scheme, you can make a voluntary contribution - simply give what you feel comfortable with.”
The council has set up an online system for people to contribute, with details to be located near the original pay machines in the car park.
