Welshpool Community Haven future secured

A charity that has re-introduced day centre services and other vital resources to Welshpool has secured its future, but is keen to recruit more volunteers as it looks to flourish across the area.

Welshpool Community Haven said it is indebted to those who have helped the charity through a challenging period, ensuring vital support services for the local community could continue.

Whilst negotiations were ongoing for a long-term lease of the Ann Holloway Centre near the hospital, the charity said it missed out on up to £100,000 in vital funding, so have praised those who stepped up to see them through.

“The charity would like to express its sincere gratitude to Cllr Graham Breeze and Powys County Council for a grant of £5,000, alongside the continued encouragement and backing he has shown,” the charity said in a statement.

“Thanks are also extended to the National Lottery for their generous £17,500 award, NFU Mutual Welshpool (£9,000) for their support, and the many individuals and organisations who have made donations.

“Without this support, we would not have been able to continue our work.”

Now, with the lease secured, the future is looking far more positive. The charity reports that this milestone is already opening new doors and opportunities, placing them in a much stronger position to secure long-term funding and sustainability for the benefit of the community.

Welshpool Community Haven, which supports elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents as well as unpaid carers, has created a multi-agency/charity used hub, and continues to see growing demand for its services, which focus on reducing isolation and improving wellbeing.

Working with partner charities and agencies, exciting developments are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, as plans move closer to completion.

In the meantime, the charity is making an urgent appeal for volunteers. Due to illness and other commitments, there is currently a shortage of volunteers - particularly Meals on Wheels drivers.

“Even a small amount of time can make a big difference, Whether it’s three hours once a week or once a month, new volunteers would be warmly welcomed. All volunteer-related expenses are covered,” they said.

There are also plans to expand the Meals on Wheels service into surrounding areas including Meifod and Montgomery, making “additional support even more vital”.

Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more can call 01938 554458, visit the team at the Ann Holloway Centre (next to Welshpool Hospital), or email contact@welshpoolcommunityhaven.co.uk.

Welshpool Community Haven also asked to thank the community for the ongoing support, adding that it remains committed to being there for those who need it most, now and for years to come.
