Is this the worst sign you have ever seen?

Welshpool is desperately trying to replace what has been labelled by the Town Clerk as “the worst sign I have ever seen!”.

The drab-looking Welcome to Welshpool sign on the bridge at the railway station has come in for sharp criticism after it was identified as one of the signs that needed replacing as part of a bigger project to prepare the town for the Tour de France next year.

The sign consists of low resolution and out-of-focus pictures and directs visitors to a ‘Visit Welshpool’ web site that no longer exists. It also promotes the public toilets at Berriew Street which have been closed for several years.

At the latest Operations & Development Committee meeting, Town Clerk, Richard Williams, said: “Unfortunately, it is the worst sign that I have ever seen in my life.

“It’s blurry. It is not a good advert for Welshpool, especially when we are going to be playing host to a lot of international events.

“So, I am trying to get it replaced. However, the people who own the bridge are different to the people to own the station, who are different to the people who own the car park. So, it is a bit of a round the houses as to how we get it replaced.

“We are just waiting for the consents on that one.”

Welshpool has some big events coming in 2027, and the Town Council is working closely with Powys County Council to ensure that the town will be ready, with ‘welcome’ signage a major issue being addressed.
