There has been a sigh of relief today after oil prices dropped back below $100 a barrel, but one local garage has hit back over claims that businesses are cashing in at the pump.
The USA and Israel attacks on Iran have sparked a crisis in the Persian Gulf, with oil tankers unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz which accounts for roughly a quarter of the world’s oil and gas supply that is transported by sea.
It has resulted in the costs of both doubling on the international market, and the trickle-down affect is impacting us already, both at the petrol pumps and in our heating bills.
It prompted H Ballard & Son Motors on the back road to stand up for independent petrol providers who were being unfairly accused of cashing in.
They stated on their official Facebook page: “It has come to our attention that due to our increase and Hardings’ increase in diesel prices people think we are ‘cashing in’ with everything going on in the world.
“This is not the case, we had a comfortable amount of diesel last week at a good competitive price, but due to people panic buying this was gone in a matter of two days.
“Currently the market is going up and down by the hour if not less, so diesel and petrol companies cannot give us a price until the delivery is made.
“Unfortunately, it was a need and we needed the diesel as we ran out and yes it jumped up in price. We do not rip off our customers and make money off awful situations.
“We are always fair with our pricing on our fuel.”
The price has dropped considerably today after USA President, Donald Trump, claimed an end to the onslaught was in sight, with their attacks likely to end sooner rather than later.
