A fantastic community initiative has resulted in the unveiling this weekend of a stunning bike track in Llanfyllin.
The Llanfyllin Community Initiative project has officially opened at Coed y Cain, located in woodland behind Ysgol Llanfyllin.
The Parc Beicau Coed y Cain Bike Park was formally opened on Sunday by Mayor Cllr Andrew Griffin, marking an exciting milestone for outdoor recreation and youth activity in the area.
The project provides a purpose-built space for riders of all abilities, from beginners taking their first ride to more experienced cyclists looking to develop their skills.
The Coed y Cain trails include beginner (Chicken), intermediate (Llanthrillin) and advanced (Llwynatic) routes, along with a dedicated skills area. Together these create a welcoming environment where riders can build confidence, progress safely and enjoy mountain biking in a natural woodland setting.
Speaking at the opening, Cllr Peter Lewis, a member of Llanfyllin Community Initiative, said: “Coed y Cain is a fantastic addition for Llanfyllin and the surrounding area. It provides a dedicated space for young people, families and riders of all abilities to enjoy cycling, develop their skills and spend time outdoors. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision.”
Mayor Cllr Andrew Griffin added: “This is a proud moment for Llanfyllin. Projects like this encourage healthy activity, outdoor recreation and community pride. Coed y Cain will be a real asset for the local community, Ysgol Llanfyllin and visitors alike.”
The project has been made possible through close collaboration between Llanfyllin Community Initiative and Llanfyllin Town Council, together with the support of many volunteers and local organisations.
Tim Foster of Llanfyllin Community Initiative, speaking at the opening, thanked Cycling Wales for their funding support, along with Llanfyllin Town Council, local businesses and volunteers whose contributions, expertise and hard work helped bring the trails to life after three years of planning and development.
Located just behind Ysgol Llanfyllin, the trails are expected to become a valued local facility and a focal point for cycling in the area.
Headteacher Dewi Owen said: “We are incredibly proud of this new bike track facility, which is something very special - in fact, a first for a school anywhere in the UK.
“It was fantastic to see so many of our young people out on the tracks already alongside members of the local community, enjoying the space and supporting one another.
“The project is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when schools, community partners and local organisations work together with a shared vision. It’s a resource that will benefit our pupils and the wider community for many years to come.
“I predict that we will be producing the champions and professionals of the future from, quite literally, our own back yard!”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the trails and enjoy this exciting new addition to Llanfyllin’s outdoor spaces.
