Welshpool Town Council voted last night to confer the Honorary Freedom of the Town upon local Olympian Adele Nicoll, in recognition of her outstanding sporting achievements and her role as an inspirational ambassador for Welshpool on the national and international stage.
The 29-year-old has achieved remarkable success across two demanding elite sports – athletics and bobsleigh.
A multiple Welsh Athletics Champion, she secured British shot put titles at the 2022, 2023 and 2025 UK Athletics Championships and represented Wales at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, finishing eighth in the shot put final.
In bobsleigh, Adele’s achievements have been equally impressive. She only became a pilot three years ago and has rapidly progressed to become a formiddable competitor on the IBSF World Cup circuit Bobsleigh Europa Cup.
She became the first Briton selected to compete in the Olympic Monobob event and represented Team GB at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in both Monobob and 2-woman Bobsleigh.
At a specially arranged meeting last night, the Council resolved to admit Adele as an Honorary Freewoman, recognising her as a person of “distinction who has rendered eminent service to the town through her achievements, dedication and commitment to excellence”.
The title of Honorary Freewoman is the highest civic honour the Town Council can bestow and is the first time it has been awarded since the 1970s by the then Borough of Welshpool.
A formal civic ceremony to present the Honorary Freedom of the Town will take place later this year and the event format will be planned by the Town Council with Adele.
