The Welshpool area was glued to their TV screens, phones and lap tops this morning as local girl Adele Nicoll made her Olympic dream come true at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games.
The 29-year-old looked full of confidence as she emerged at the Cortina Sliding Centre to tackle the opening heat of the Monobob, before she rightly showed why she deserves her place amongst the world’s elite.
Adele, who is also a three-time British shot put champion, completed her first heat in a time of one-minute and 0.54 seconds, reaching speeds of up to 123km/h to finish in a very respectable 16th spot from the 25 world-class competitors.
That sent her into the second heat a little over a second behind leader Laura Nolte, from Germany, but just 0.4 of a second from 10th spot which she will need to secure after three heats in order to make the final tomorrow.
The second heat saw Adele improve on her first heat time to go into tomorrow’s third heat with a combined time of two minutes and 0.83 seconds. That sees her sit in 13th spot and just over half-a-second behind that must-have tenth place if she is to advance into the fourth and final heat.
So, onto tomorrow now and that important third heat at 6pm (UK time), after which, Adele will need to have secured a top-10 spot to qualify for the final heat which will start at 8.06pm.
Regardless of what happens though from here on in, Adele has made us all extremely proud, and has hopefully inspired a whole generation of youngsters by proving that dreams really can come true.
And don't forget, she still has the two-woman bobsleigh to look forward to next weekend.
