A success story for Welshpool’s youth

A story that we have featured heavily on MyWelshpool has grown into a flourishing success that is engaging with dozens of youth from across the Welshpool area.

The Feathers Association opened a new centre for youth in the town close to the former Youth Club at Maesydre, and following an overwhelming early success, it is now looking to recruit more adult staff to expand their opening hours to five days a week.

The initiative is overseen by Gwen Evans who has worked with the town’s youth for many years and recognises the importance of providing such a facility.

“We had a very busy half term, when the centre was open from 2pm every day,” she said. “The Inglenook Café and Andrews donated meals and as well as the usual games, crafts and music we held competitions in pool, darts and table tennis.

“We continued with our Build a Band music project, expertly supported by Music Anywhere. The project is coming to an end with the group having recorded a song but we will continue with this project next term. We were also invited to hand out the medals at the Welshpool 10k.

“Funding was also given for two trips - we watched Shrewsbury Town play and enjoyed an afternoon at Black Hawk Laser, Oswestry. In all, 166 young people attended our holiday programme.”

The fun has continued since half term with the centre open three nights a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3.30pm), and a trip was organised to Apex karting, Deeside. They are also preparing for a football match against Newport County FC.

“We are really keen to open five nights a week by adding Tuesdays and Thursdays so we are recruiting,” said Gwen. “If anyone is interested in working with us, please contact me through gwen.evans@feathers.charity or 07538 502374.”
