School takes action after oil spill forces two-day closure

Buttington Trewern County Primary School will reopen on Wednesday after two days of closure caused by an oil spill.

In a letter to parents and carers this afternoon that signed off by Head, Anna Griggs, and Chair, Fiona Warburton, it was explained that an oil spillage last Friday during a routine delivery had led to a “swift response”.

“The work to remove the contaminated material is ongoing and is occurring in an area of the school separated from the learners,” the letter explains.

“Unfortunately, the spill has also affected the operation of the boiler, which is located below ground level.

“Working closely with Powys Health & Safety, we have assessed the safety of the site through ongoing specialist monitoring including vapour levels and water sampling and measures have been put in place to provide temporary heating.

“From Wednesday (tomorrow), a small number of classes will be temporarily housed in other areas of the school whilst works are completed.”

The letter goes on to add that “as a precaution”, bottled water will be on site for staff and children and meals will be imported from a local school in the interim period. Toilet and hand washing arrangements remain as normal.

“We do apologise that our learners have missed two days off school and the impact this has caused to our parents,” the letter continues. “However, the two-day closure has enabled the team to ensure that the site is being risk managed and temporary classes are set up for the return of our learners.”
