Welshpool Rugby Club did their best to drink the town dry last night after securing a magnificent Division Two (North) title in style.
The Maesydre men narrowly missed out on promotion last year, but made up for it yesterday by beating closest rivals Teirw Nant, with the bonus point for scoring four tries also securing the title with three games left to play.
Their opposition was the only team to inflict a league defeat on Welshpool this season, so a tight encounter was expected, but Welshpool were backed by another healthy crowd who roared them on to victory.
Pool raced into a comfortable 15-3 half time lead, but Teirw Nant fought back to give the home side plenty to do. However, a strong finish saw the lads charge home, and secure the title.
Brilliant skipper Ryan Goodwin led the way with a pair of tries, while Lewis Cann, Jason Isaac and Tom Davies all scored one apiece, and Scott Masterman slotted home two conversions for the 29-20 victory.
Meanwhile, the game also saw the club do their bid for the 8x10km challenge which is being led by former local headteacher Phil Jones who is organising eight 10km runs in eight days for Parkinson’s Cymru next month.
