Fight starts to save sports centres

09/11/2024 @ 01:28

The possibility of Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfyllin and Llanidloes Sports Centres closing as part of a review by Powys County Council is being challenged.

In Llanidloes, Glyn Preston, a member of the liberal Democrat-led council, has called on the Welsh Govenment to help modernise the centre and school facilities adjoining it. Councillors and residents in both Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin are also rolling up their sleeves for a fight.

It comes following an announcement by Powys County Council that it plans to consult on leisure centres and services in 2025. It includes the possibility of some centres closing or being transferred to other operators, including local communities.

Mr Preston said: "Powys County Council have concluded their review of leisure services in the County. In Spring 2025, they will be consulting on a number of changes to leisure services in the county.

"Llanidloes Leisure Centre is well-used, well-integrated with the school, and the case for keeping it open is very strong."

Cllr Preston said he will fight "tooth and nail" to keep the leisure centre open.

He's calling on the Welsh Government to make funds available to Powys Council to modernise the facility, including Solar PV and better insulation.
