Tourist Centre toilets ‘almost ready’

There was some encouraging news at this week’s Town Council meeting with an update on the Tourist Information Centre work revealing the long-awaited toilets had now been installed.

The project has been an expensive thorn in the Town Council’s side, with the budget to reconfigure the building exploding from an initial £100,000 to an estimated £280,000 to complete.

It has been the subject of heated debate over the past 12 months, but with the council previously agreeing to learn from the mistakes made, and move on to completing, there was good news from Operations Manager, Paul McGrath.

“They are basically now finished,” said Mr McGrath. “We have ordered signage to say which is which. They need a good clean with the store cupboards topped up.”

He added that there was an issue over an unknown cable hanging over a door that needed a specialist firm to sort, as it could be a former sensor, and that, once solved, they could move towards an opening date.

“We’re going as quick as we can to get them opened up as soon as possible,” he said.

The building work has been done to allow the Town Council staff to move to the facility in a bid to save rental costs, and the toilets have been upgraded to include a much needed Changing Places facility.
