Campaigners Colin and Kayleigh receive MBEs

A former Guilsfield man whose tireless campaigning with his wife and others helped to expose the dreadful maternity crisis at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has received his MBE.

Colin Griffiths, and his wife Kayleigh, lost their second daughter Pippa in 2016 due to the incompetence of the hospital’s maternity services, and the pair fought tirelessly to expose the shortcomings despite attempts to silence them by the hospital’s Trust.

It led to one of the biggest investigations in NHS history, and has brought about an overhaul at the hospital after the shocking Ockenden report found that 201 babies and nine mothers had died that could have survived if they had received better care.

Thanks to the couple, and others who refused to be silenced, maternity services have been transformed and lives have undoubtedly been saved.

The couple, who now live in Myddle, Shropshire, were presented with their MBEs for services to maternity care by the Princess Royal, HRH Princess Ann, at Buckingham Palace.

Colin is the son of Avril and Peter Griffiths, of Guilsfield, and is a former pupil of Guilsfield Primary School and Welshpool High School.
