Rage over cash strapped Welshpool

28/08/2023 @ 08:31

Welshpool’s banking demise has been highlighted once again this weekend after several of the remaining cash machines ran out of money.

The popular dispensers at Morrisons, Applegreen and Tesco both ran dry, as people took to social media to ask where there could be money available.

Visitors who come through the town in their droves over the Bank Holiday weekend were also left bemused by the lack of cash facilities with one holiday maker from the Midlands telling us “we won’t be stopping here again” after walking up and down the town centre.

Queues were lengthy at the Post Office where staff dealt with increased cash requests, with concerns relayed to one customer that money could run out there too.

Several pubs, like the Westwood, offered cash back services with a purchase, but the weekend has again highlighted the problems Welshpool faces with not a single bank operating in the town.

County Councillor Richard Church has urged residents to contact Link, the company behind the new Banking Hub that is expected to open in the former Lloyds Bank premises later this year.

“People are rightly annoyed at the lack of cash in Welshpool,” said Cllr Church. “It’s not the first time the cash machines have been empty, and it happens more on busy holiday weekends. That's predictable, and Link, who operate cash machines on behalf of all the major banks should be able to plan for it.

“People are turning to social media to vent their annoyance, but there’s more you can do. I have complained to Link via their website https://www.link.co.uk/help/help-with-anything-else/ and urge others to do the same.

“Yes, we will have a Banking Hub in the town operated by Link soon, but if they don’t ensure it is properly supplied it won’t help.

“They need to know our annoyance at the poor service they are giving to our town. Link won't see complaints on Facebook, but they have a responsibility to respond to complaints on their own website.”
