Dozens of women from the Welshpool area came together last night to back a campaign to improve women’s safety while out running in the dark this winter.
Own the Night has been launched by Welsh Athletics and is backed by Dyfed-Powys Police, with events happening across the country to raise awareness of women’s safety when running at night or early mornings, and empower them to continue running through the darker months ahead.
Welshpool’s event last night welcome 37 women who enjoyed a leisurely three-mile run at various paces amidst a friendly, social atmosphere.
It was organised by serving police officer Lindsay Evans who said: “As a serving police officer and a woman who loves running, I’m passionate about encouraging women to feel confident, supported and safe when out and about.
“Let’s support one another, build confidence and show that women should feel free to enjoy running without fear.”
For anyone wanting to run in the months ahead as part of a group, you can contact Run Club in Welshpool through their Facebook page. They host two runs every week when “everyone is welcome, whether you’re a regular or coming along for the first time”.
