We’re set for a ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Award-winning local theatre group, Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society (LADS), is bringing a bewitching Shakespeare play to local venues in June.

Fresh from their renewed success at the Montgomeryshire Community Drama Association play festival, where they scooped up four awards including Best Production, LADS have turned their sights to Shakespeare.

Their summer production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set to delight and entertain fans old and new, with its intertwining tales of quarrelling fairies, amateur thespians and luckless lovers.

Director, Elinor Williams, is leading a LADS production for the first time – although she has been a regular cast member for several years. She has pulled together a large cast of players to bring the play to life, which she has set at a colourful and slightly crazy festival with echoes of Glastonbury.

“At a festival, people leave their ordinary lives behind and anything goes – which is exactly what happens to everyone during this mad midsummer’s night in the woods,” she said.

“I wanted to use Shakespeare’s fabulous script but bring it into a modern, but slightly bonkers, context. Everything is upside-down and hilariously confused – but of course, it all comes right in the end.”

The LADS often take their productions out to venues across Shropshire and the borders, and this show is no exception.

They will be sharing this family-friendly production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with new audiences at Berriew Village Hall, as well as at familiar venues in Kinnerley and Llanymynech. And there will be two outdoor performances, where audiences can bring picnics and really get into the spirit.

“We are really looking forward to performing outdoors at Y Dolydd, the old workhouse in Llanfyllin, and at Oteley Estate by the mere in Ellesmere,” Elinor said. “Both of these venues provide a magical setting for the play and promise to give audiences a really memorable experience. Whether you’re new to Shakespeare or fans of the bard, we hope that you will fall under the spell of this enchanting story.”
