An initiative soundly backed by MyWelshpool readers that has raised over £30,000 for Parkinson’s UK Cymru gets its third edition underway tonight with a sold-out gala dinner at the Royal Oak.
The March 10x10k Challenge was created by former Ysgol Bro Caereinion head teacher Philip Jones who originally challenged people to run, walk, cycle or row seven 10km distances in 2024.
Last year, that was increased to eight, and from March 8 the challenge this year is to complete 10 within 14 days.
Once again, the community has thrown its weight behind the initiative, with a sold-out gala dinner tonight getting things underway, followed by former boxer Warren ‘BigRig’ Sinden looking to break a British record tomorrow for the quickest time to complete 100kms on a SkiErg.
“We started this trilogy with three aims,” said Philip. “To raise awareness of the condition, to encourage people to exercise and to raise money for the charity. I think we can say, job done!”
Philip said he has been well supported by local businesses once again with Great Fitness and Coco acting as host venues for some of the events. Over £4,000 has already been raised this year.
Tonight’s gala dinner will be supported by Cathy Beech who is providing the entertainment and Phil Blagg is once again the Challenge’s official photographer, with all donating their time for the cause.
