Welshpool’s own Mr Showbiz, Alan Crowe, has published a new book that highlights the role that entertainers played in World War Two.
Entitled Stars Who Served in WW2, the book gives details of over 160 stars of stage, screen and television who played an active role in the Armed Services during the horrific conflict.
“Working on the book, doing the research, has been a labour of love,” said Alan. “It combines my love of showbiz and my love of the Second World War, and it has come out ready for the forthcoming celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.”
Copies of the book, priced £11.99, can be obtained from Alan himself, Hardy’s Bookstore in Berriew Street Welshpool, most leading book shops or Amazon.
All profits will go to the ENSA Memorial Appeal.
The book includes stars from James Bond, Dad’s Army, Coronation Street, Steptoe & Son, Last of the Summer Wine, Carry On Films, The Avengers, Are You Being Served, Only Fools and Horses, Brookside, Dr Who, and On the Buses.
It contains a brief resume of the careers and wartime involvement of star names including Alfie Bass, Richard Attenborough, Benny Hill, Dick Emery, Frankie Howard, Stanley Baxter, Dora Bryan, Richard Burton, Charlie Drake, Max Bygraves, Agatha Christie, Barbara Cartland, Tommy Cooper, Alan Whicker, Alfred Hitchcock, Arthur Haynes to name a few.
