Rhiannon’s marathon effort for son, Axel

A Montgomery mother-of-four is tackling the London Marathon in April to give back to a charity who she admits that “life would be much harder without them”.

Rhiannon Jones, 34, is a full-time carer for her youngest child, Axel, 3, who has cerebral palsy, a lifelong neurological condition that affects movement, muscle control, swallowing, speech, vision, and learning.

His condition was caused by a severe case of sepsis he contracted while in ICU after undergoing his first open-heart surgery, which led to a brain bleed.

“I am running a marathon in support of Cerebral Palsy Cymru, a charity that has been instrumental in providing direct support for my son, Axel,” said Rhiannon.

“As Axel’s full-time carer, I am unable to work, but despite his difficult start in life and facing his second open-heart surgery in August 2024, Axel is thriving.

“He attends pre-school twice a week and enjoys playing with his three older sisters (Ella-Grace, 10; Olivia 8; Paige, 8). He also attends a playgroup at Hope House, where we receive additional support.

“I have always been passionate about running for my fitness and mental health. In 2023, I participated in the Newtown, Welshpool, and Oswestry 10Ks, as well as the Lake Vyrnwy half marathon, all in support of Hope House, which also supports our family.

“This marathon will be my biggest challenge, both physically and mentally, but I am determined to cross that finish line.

“I am running to give back to the charities that have helped our family, as life would be much harder without their support. Axel and other children like him inspire me to keep going, and I hope that by sharing my journey, I can raise awareness and help others.
