Residents who are set to move into a new independent living development in Welshpool have shared an afternoon tea to meet their new neighbours.
Neuadd Maldwyn is the new development of 66 one-and-two-bedroom apartments located in the centre of Welshpool at the former district council headquarters, which have been transformed at a cost of £11.6 million.
The scheme, built by Anwyl Partnerships on behalf of ClwydAlyn, along with Powys County Council, supported by Welsh Government and Powys Teaching Health Board, will offer independent living, with tailored care and support available for those who need it.
Homes for over 60s are in high-demand in Welshpool and Neuadd Maldwyn will offer stable and comfortable bases for individuals and couples.
The afternoon tea event offered the future residents the opportunity to hear the latest news about the development, which MyWelshpool understands could open this spring.
Priority for available new homes at Neuadd Maldwyn has been given to residents from the Powys area, aged over 60 with assessed care or support needs. Ongoing housing management and ancillary services will be provided by ClwydAlyn. Powys County Council will take responsibility for on-site domiciliary care.
At the heart of the Neuadd Maldwyn development are the recognisable former council offices; Neo-Georgian Grade II listed buildings, completed in 1931. A sympathetic conversion of the original architecture, alongside newly constructed purpose-built homes, has created an impressive town-centre living complex. Residents will be able to enjoy communal facilities, a restaurant, parking and landscaping; all within walking distance of local amenities.
The afternoon tea was organised by ClwydAlyn. Residents met at Welshpool Town Hall to enjoy a spread of sandwiches, sweet treats and hot drinks; whilst having the opportunity to chat to members of their new community.
Annette and Ray (pictured) said they are looking forward to moving into their new apartment.
“After 25 years in the area, we’re now facing some health challenges, so decided it was time to move,” said Annette.
“We’ve always admired the lovely building that is Neuadd Maldwyn - we even got married there! So as the development progressed, we decided to find out more.
“We didn’t really expect to find what we were looking for after living in a small, rural village but in fact it ticked so many boxes for us. The location is perfect being flat and central to amenities in town. The apartments themselves look lovely with the added security of access to care onsite, should we need it.
“We’re so looking forward to being able to walk out for coffee and meet friends and, with the train station just a few minutes away, having a day out at Aberystwyth in summer. It’s a new chapter for us and one we’ll be making the most of!”
Dylan Davies, Senior Development Project Manager at ClwydAlyn, said: “We’ve really enjoyed welcoming our new residents to afternoon tea today. The conversion of Neuadd Maldwyn has ensured that this wonderful building can continue to be a part of the Welshpool community for many years to come, along with the purpose-built buildings we’ve added.
“We wanted to provide an informal opportunity for everyone to meet, get to know their neighbours and chat to key staff before moving day. It was a great event. Now we’re very much looking forward to handing over the homes to their new residents.”
