Welshpool Fusiliers mark 70 years of Association

There was cause for double celebration in Welshpool when the town’s Comrades Branch of the Royal Welch Fusiliers marked 70 years since being formed in the summer of 1954.

It is also 100 years since the original Royal Welch Fusiliers Comrades Association was formed in the Wrexham barracks, with an annual reunion held every September since.

Back in 1954, the ‘Originals’ from Welshpool (pictured below) joined the national reunion and the association has gone from strength to strength with ex-servicemen from other Regiments also joining.

The association lost their last WW2 veteran, Jack Ellis, in 2021, and last year, their two oldest members, Major Monty Robinson and Roy Beeston, also sadly died.

“We as a Branch decided to carry on and to hold a 70th Anniversary Barbecue in order to keep our close ties to the community of Welshpool,” said Colin Rogers, who organised the event.

“We invited as many family members of the Comrades who have passed to the celebrations as possible and enjoyed a lovely afternoon and evening at the COWSHACC.”

Members and guests enjoyed a slide show of images from the years with pictures also printed and shared to bring back the memories.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and evening,” said Colin. “We would like to thank Farrell McManus and Kylie Carter of the COWSHACC for all their help, Rikki Lloyd and his lovely ladies who served up the food, and Craig Humphreys and his great staff from the Angel.

“Finally, the Branch would like to thank all the family members who attended and made it such a great day, and to those who donated on the day.”
