Village clubs ‘quids-in’ from defunct football team

For five years, Cegidfa Football Club competed in the Newtown Sunday League and ensured there was a game of football for anyone local looking for a game.

The team won seven trophies, but with the popularity of Sunday football waning, the club called it a day, shortly before the league folded.

However, it was a prolific fundraiser and ended its days with more than £2,000 in the bank which has this week been distributed amongst seven Guilsfield sports clubs and organisations.

“We couldn’t have run such a successful club without the generosity of the village and its organisations and the commitment from players and committee,” said Jane Nash, on behalf of the former committee.

“We were also pleased over the five seasons to be able to donate sums of money to various clubs/organisations in the village. These were raised from fundraising events and players subscriptions.

“After bringing the club’s finances to a close, on behalf of all of the players and committee we are delighted to pass on what’s left to a number of clubs and organisations that are currently running in the village. So, a big thank-you from us all at Cegidfa Football Club.”

The clubs to benefit are Guilsfield Cricket Club, Guilsfield Tennis Club, Guilsfield Bowling Club, Guilsfield Netball Club, Guilsfield Primary School PTA, Spotlight Magazine and the Jubilee Hut.

Jane was joined at the presentation by fellow founders and committee members Ian Nash and Steve Jones, with Dai Walsh unable to attend on the presentation day.
