Welshpool voucher scheme set to go ahead

A voucher scheme to boost local business is set to go ahead after being soundly backed by Welshpool Town Council.

The topic has been kicked around by the council’s Events and Planning Committee for a few months, and at their latest meeting they decided to recommend it to full council for approval.

Vouchers will be sold at the Welshpool Information Centre (pictured) to be used across participating outlets, but it had only received a lukewarm reception with just six businesses responding to a consultation.

Not to be put off, the council has decided to press ahead anyway.

“I talked to a couple of traders in town and they were saying they won’t implement it, but then I spoke to another couple who were for it,” said Cllr Morag Bailey at the meeting.

“It can’t be any harm to give it a go and see the result. I am fully in support of it.”

But Cllr Bill Rowell, the Mayor, called for caution and said they should learn from the mistakes of the former Welshpool Card scheme from a few years back.

“What factors led to it being discontinued and can we learn from this?” he asked. “It’s definitely worth a try and needs a trial period that would be reviewed.”

Councillors agreed to recommend it to full council with a final decision expected later this month. They have also advised a one-year trial period.
