Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a lively action at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (50)
OTMs averaged 127.62ppkg and the younger cows 120.38ppkg. Topping the Otms was TH & ME & EJ Jones, Plas Coch, with a Limousin cow weighing 803kg making £1300.86. Probert and Probert, Lower Hill, presented a British Blue cow weighing 674kg making £1267.12. The younger cows topped at £1294.44 for a Limousin weighing 804kg from TH & ME & EJ Jones, Plas Coch. Bulls under 72 months topped at £1476.43 for a Limousin weighing 773kg from RG & KA Lewis, Hockleton.
PRIME CATTLE (6)
Six fat cattle forward, EE & MJ Jones & Sons, Cwmbychan, presented four beasts, two steers weighing 527kg and 604kg making 209ppkg and 206ppkg respectively. Two Limousin top heavy heifers, from the same home, weighed 493kg and 487kg making 185ppkg and 184ppkg respectively. J W Power, Maesygraig, presented a Charolais steer weighing 608kg made 209ppkg and a Charolais top heavy heifer weighing 628kg making 196ppkg.
PRIME HOGGETS (4595)
A entry of 4595 prime hoggets saw an overall average of 186.83pp/kg.
Super Lights (163) to 172pp/kg & 167pp/kg from W Beamond, Cwmcarnedd. Others to 167pp/kg from J LL Morgans & Sons, Tymawr. Average of 165.66pp/kg.
Lights (523) to 206pp/kg from DB & EFJ Gethin, Dolyrheol. Others to 200pp/kg from MRM Matthews, Tanyfron. Average of 182.14pp/kg.
Standards (955) to 219pp/kg from J T Jones, Tynewydd Cyffin. Others to 213pp/kg from DB & EFJ Gethin, Dolyrheol. Average of 184.46pp/kg
Mediums (1771) to 258pp/kg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 249pp/kg from GL JS & A Howells, Shadog Farm. Average of 188.88pp/kg.
Heavies (959) to 240pp/kg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 221pp/kg from WEG Evans, Llwynycrwth. Average of 183.48pp/kg.
Over Weights (204) to 204pp/kg from E L Evans, Derlwyn. Others to 173pp/kg from JG & MWA Clayton, Great Brimmon. Average of 162.84pp/kg.
CULL SHEEP (2343)
A slightly increased entry of 2343 culls met with averages of £62.20 for ewes and £82.24 for rams. Top price in the ewes was £137 for a ewes from EL Andrew, Trewern Cottage. I Jenking, Bryneglur, presented one ewe making £135. Rams topped at £139 for a pen of 5 rams from HW & HP Jerman, Cwmpenllydan. BJ & MA Morgan, Old Neuadd, presented one ram making £131.
Weekly sales of culls to commence at approximately 12 noon, after the sale of prime hoggs.
STORE LAMBS
Another seasonal entry this week, seeing 353 store lambs forward. They sold to a good average of £56.
A few lots shared the top price today, the first being Suffolk cross mixed/clean lambs forward from EW & EG Griffiths, Gilfach, achieving a price of £70. Suffolk tup lambs form the same home also achieved £70. Shapely Texel cross mixed/clean lambs forward from PL & PG Bumford, Rhosfawr, again made £70. Texel cross ewe lambs forward from G Jones, Bryneithin, achieved £64.50. Same again next week with store lambs selling from 10.30am.
Cade Lambs: This week saw another entry of 15 cade lambs forward, selling to an average of £19. Four lots shared the top price of £25 with two achieving a price of £24.

IN-LAMB EWES
This week saw an entry of 119 in lamb ewes. Top price of the day went to R B Jones, Llwynobin, for strong square bodied Suffolk cross ewes. These were 4 year old ewes scanned at 220%, due to a Texel tup on the 1st March.
Pure Texel yearlings forward from JP & EM Jones, Penygraig, achieved a price of £132. These were scanned for twins and due to a Texel tup from the 20th March. 3 and 4 year old Texel cross ewes forward from EB & LG Jones, Tynymynydd, sold to £136. Welsh 3 and 4 year old ewes scanned for triplets due to a Texel tup achieved a price of £104. Same again next week with the sale of in lamb ewes to follow the sale of store lambs.
Couples: This week saw an entry of 11 couples. Top price went to J Payne, Plas Trehelig, for a Charollais cross 2 year old ewe with twin lambs at foot, achieving £158. A yearling Dorper ewe with a strong lamb at foot forward from H M Powell, White House, achieved £146. Texel cross full mouth ewes with twin lambs at foot made £132. Other highlights saw Suffolk cross as found ewes with single lambs at foot to £132. Same again next week with the sale of couples to follow the sale of store lambs.
COWS & CALVES
There was a reasonable trade on the cows and calves for the outfits on offer with a top price of £1950 being achieved by HE Pugh, Grove, Nesscliffe, for a Limousin 3rd calver with a Limousin bull calf at foot. From the same home were two more Limousin 3rd calvers with heifer calves that sold for £1900 each. Presented by RH Brassington, Oak Lane Farm, was an Angus x 1st calver with and Angus bull calf which sold for £1900. A special entry of 9 cows and calves and 4 in-calf cows from MCE Jones & R Jones (deceased), Greiddyn, Guilsfield, sold to a sound trade with a top price of £1500 achieved for a 2009 born Limousin x cow with a Lim bull calf. A limousin x cow in calf to a Limousin bull sold to a top of £1020. Overall the 9 cows and calves averaged £1112, with in calf cows averaging £1000. From IC & EA Jerman, Pigeon House, was a Limousin x cow with a heifer calf which made £1520. Presented by VAS & SM Corbett, The Gorther, was a Pedigree Limousin Bull from the Temeside Herd at Felindre. Sired by Proctors Duvalier, Temeside Indy went to sell for £2500. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000+ 1 lot, £1800 - £2000 4 lots, £1400 - £1600 2 lots, £1200 - £1400 3 lots, £1000 - £1200 17 lots, < £1000 4 lots.
