Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale at Buttington Cross, Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (46)
An excellent entry 46 cows met with an average of 107.78pp/kg for the older cows and 146.39ppkg for the younger cows. Topping the OTM section and reciving the Brairwood Products ltd prize of £25 for highest price on the day went to T & A & R Tudor, Llysun, for a Salers cow weighing 794kg making £1103.66. B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, receives a prize for highest price cull cow in the section for a British Blue cow 729kg making £1589.22. E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-yr-ychain, presented a Limousin under 48 months heifers weighing 677kg making £1597.72. Another under 48 months British Blue heifer from B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, weighed 619kg making £1398.94.
FAT CATTLE (42)
The Fat cattle show was kindly sponsored by Briarwood Products ltd and For Farmers and was judged by Mr Stephen B Jones and Mr Trevor Watkin. The Champion title was awarded to E H Pennie & Son, Gwern-Yr-Ychain. The Limousin steer, that was also 1st prize Bullock, weighed 619kg and made 330ppkg realising £2042.70 and was bought by Mr Brian Evans of GR Evans & Co, Corwen Wholesale Butchers. The 2nd prize bullock went to MR J M Rowlands, Dolwen.
The reserve champion went to a 582kg Limousin Heifer, which also achieved 1st prize Heifer title, from Mr J M Rowlands, Dolwen, making 300ppkg realising £1746 and was purchased by Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool. The 2nd prize heifer went to B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli.
The best pair of heifers went to MR J M Rowlands, Dolwen, Llanidloes. Both Limouson heifers weighed 592 kg making 252ppkg and 250ppkg, respectively, and both sold to Rikki Lloyd Butchers, Welshpool. Jones Bros, Ystradolwyn, achieved 2nd prize pair of heifers which made 204ppkg and 226ppkg.
The pair of steers was won by C J Davies & Son, Waengwyn, with two Limousins weighing 660kg and 602kg making 218ppkg and 222ppkg respectively. C J Davies, Waengwyn, also won 2nd prize steers making 226ppkg and 220ppkg.
The total entry of 43 cattle drew great attention, with a ring full of buyers taking part and competing for the quality of stock.
Overall average 229.23ppkg.

Out of the outstanding entry of prime lambs 220 were entered in the 3 show classes. CULL SHEEP (3099)
A tremendous trade with all sorts most keenly contested for. Several runs of mainly welsh made in-between £50 and £55. Mule reaching highs of £90, with whole pens of Texels selling fro £157, £145 and £134 respectively. A Charollais tup achieved £158. The 2000 forward averages £59.25. Some of the highlights in the section were highest price of cull ewes was achieved by S A Cherry, The Graig, for a pen of 5 Making £157. B L Griffiths, Lower Penygelli, made £145 for a pen of 5. D P Casewell, Tanrhiw, made £134 for a pen of 5 ewes. Cull rams topped at £158 from G Davies, Lan Farm.
STORE LAMBS
A bigger entry this week saw 1269 store lambs entered and selling to an overall good trade. The overall average for the store lambs this week was £57 which is slightly up on last week £56. The top price of the day went to R & L Meredith, Upper Lletherllwynt, for a strong Texel x tup selling to £82.50. Mixed and clean lambs forward from T C Evans, Cae Gwyn, sold to £71.81, whilst ewe lambs sold to £63.50 from D G Pryce, Broomhill Farm. Store lambs will be sold from 10.30am next week.
DAIRY COWS
A good entry of heifers were presented for the annual Christmas show and sale of dairy cattle at Welshpool Smithfield sponsored by Genus and Les Owen Dairy Supplies. Many thanks goes to the judge, Mr Steven Williams, Pantllwyn, Sarn, he awarded the Alun Morris perpetual trophy to a pedigree heifer ‘Connup Sweeper Torch 62’ presented by E Probert & Sons, Covenhope Farm. Mr Williams backed his judgement and purchased the heifer for £2050. 2nd prize went to WA & EM Morris, Maestanyglwyden, who sold a ‘Deengate Quentin’ sired heifer for £1980. Two pedigree heifers from T G Phillips & Co, Burgedin, one sired by ‘Woodmarsh Melburn’ and the other sired by ‘Ingleview Roscoe’ both giving 30 litres a day sold for £1920 and £1900 respectively. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2000 + 1 lots, £1800 - £2000 3 lots, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, £1400 - £1600 2 lots.
IN-CALF HEIFERS
The 4th Annual Production sale of in-calf heifers was held on Monday 8th December on behalf of Messrs D I Roberts & Sons, Stingwern, Brooks, Welshpool. Once again there was a tremendous show on offer with 32 Pedigree Lim, Purebred Lim, British Blue x Lim and 8 Lim x Friesian heifers. The majority of the heifers were due next January or February and were all in-calf to a Pedigree Limosuin Bulls. There was a lot of interest in the cattle which resulted in some spirited bidding with an excellent trade from start to finish. Topping the sale was a June ’12 born Lim x British Blue heifer in calf to ‘Woodhouse Custer’ which made £2800. Next at £2750 was a similar outfit. Achieving £2700 was a Purebred heifer in-calf to ‘Bailea Vanguish,’ whilst a British Blue x Lim also hit £2700. The 32 heifers averaged £2406. The 8 Lim x Friesians sold from £1400 to £1750 to average £1600. All in, the overall average was £2263.08. A breakdown of all prices achieved were as follows: £2600 -£2800 6 lots, £2400 - £2600 9 lots, £2200 - £2400 11 lots, £2000 - £2200 6 lots, <£2000 8 lots.
